Chapter One: Adam to Abraham
I imagine if you had the time, you would find a wealth of interesting revelations.
- The Ryrie Study Bible footnote notes that the line of Cain is omitted; but so is Able. And ll of his other children, who remain nameless even in Genesis.
- Ryrie also points out that Enoch didn't die. He walked with God and was taken to heaven without having to die.
- It sounds like the emphasis of the list is to follow the Davidic line and the Levites' line for the priesthood. Since Ezra would want to be rebuilding the infrastructure to obey God's law.
It's interesting. I usually blow by the genealogy passage pretty fast. But I seem to have a growing hunger for anything God has for me in His Word.
The last two thirds of Chapter One covers Esau (or Edom).
Chapter Two Jacob to David
Sons of Israel (never refers to him as Jacob):
- Ruben
- Simeon
- Levi
- Judah
- Issachar
- Zebulun
- Dan
- Joseph
- Benjamin
- Naphtali
- Gad
- Asher
Sons of Judah
- Er (wicked and put to death)
- Onan
- Shelah
- Perez
- Zerah
Chapter Three: David to Captivity
This lists the sons of David and then a long quick list that Ryrie says takes us to 500 B.C.
