Jeremiah 10

It looks like the topic for today is idolatry.

Verse 1 tells us that this message is directly from the Lord.

  • Don't do what the other nations do.
  • Don't be terrified by the signs of heaven (although the nations should be terrified of them.)
  • Idols are made from wood and man's labor. How can the prophets believe in them.
    • They have to decorate these idols
    • and have to shore them up to keep them from tottering
    • dumb like a scarecrow
    • must be carried
  • Do not fear them. They can do no harm.
  • Nor can they do good!

In verse 6, the voice changes to speaking to the Lord, so I assume it's Jeremiah.

  • None is like Thee.
  • You are great and mighty.
  • Fear is due to You
  • the nations are stupid for following dumb idols
  • Their idols are built with components by craftsmen
  • You are the true God- living and everlasting
  • His wrath quakes the earth and nations cannot endure His indignation.

In verse 11, the Lord gives Jeremiah a message for the nations worshiping idols. (Ryrie footnote states that this, verse 11, is the only verse in the book of Jeremiah written in Aramaic.)

  • Your idols will perish
  • He made heaven and earth by His power
  • He established the world through His wisdom and understanding
  • He's in control of everything, including the elements
  • Conversely, men are stupid, as are their idols

Verse 19 begins the response of the weeping prophet, Jeremiah.

Woe is me, because of my injury!
My wound is incurable.
But I said, “Truly this is a sickness,
And I must bear it.” Jeremiah 10:19, NASB, biblegateway.com

  • his tent is destroyed
  • his sons are gone and can't help raise a tent (Jeremiah never married, so the "sons" has to be symbolic?)
  • shepherds have become stupid and have not sought the Lord, so they haven't prospered.
  • commotion from the North that will lead to desolation

I know, O Lord, that a man’s way is not in himself,
Nor is it in a man who walks to direct his steps.
Correct me, O Lord, but with justice;
Not with Your anger, or You will bring me to nothing. Jeremiah 10: 23-24, NASB 95

He ends in verse 25 with a call for the Lord to pour out his wrath on the nations and the families that have not acknowledged the Lord and have devoured Jacob.
